Poppet Magic:
In Sicily we have developed our own brand of poppet magic that rivals anything in Northern Europe. Poppets can be made from a variety of mediums including cloth, clay, natural materials, etc. and can be used to produce a plethora of effects from healing and protection to love spells and cursework.
The most typical material used in this type of sympathetic magic is the lemon, it’s size and tendency to spill juices as the nails are driven into it make it a perfect stand in for the heart of another- this allows for a great sympathetic connection when performing love magics as well as the fabled “Fattura della Morte”. However it isn’t always just a stand in for the heart of a person but can be used for any appendage or organ that may be infected with various maladies, in order to kill off the illness thus healing the victim.
The shape of the lemon has also made it a popular charm against the evil eye, often times lemons pierced with nails and bound with red ribbon can be seen over the doorways of homes amongst the Sicilian peasantry- again playing off of sympathetic magic and piercing the eyes before the ill-intent can be projected.
One may notice that the use of the lemon within Sicilian sympathetic magic is predominantly for cursing (whether it’s cursing someone directly or cursing an illness or even a curse itself), however not all poppet magic is used this way.
I have just covered one variety of ‘poppet magic’ with the Sicilian Cunning Tradition but as I stated above their are many different materials, shapes and uses for these poppets that have come from the isle. This tradition is by far one of the more popularly used ones amongst the Maghi and has earned its place within the Trinacrian tradition.
